Modena Car Engineering Degree

Three new initiatives for the engineers of the future focused on intelligent mobility

MUNER born as an association between the four prestigious universities of the Emilia-Romagna Region - University of Bologna, University of Ferrara, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, University of Parma, the main car manufacturers that represent the excellence of Made in Italy in the world - Automobili Lamborghini, Dallara, Ducati, Ferrari, Haas F1 Team, Maserati, Pagani and Scuderia Alpha Tauri, together with suppliers with primary or fundamental design responsibilities for key systems - Marelli - and the most qualified suppliers of technology and specialized engineering services for automotive and motorsport - HPE Coxa. It can be defined as a campus bug as a region, stemming from the heart of the Italian Motor Valley district, land of passion for engines, where some of the most important car and motorcycle brands in the world were born and operate.

Unique in its kind for the ability to combine synergistically academic and professional domains, MUNER project starts from the awareness that the world of two and four-wheeled vehicles is going through a phase of extraordinary technical and technological evolution, which needs transversal and representative skills in order to be successfully managed. The network of associated companies and the four universities allows for unique high-level educational and training activities using a “learning by doing” approach within university laboratories and within the companies of the Motor Valley. Based on the experience gained with the “Advanced Automotive Engineering”, “Advanced Automotive Electronic Engineering” and “Electric Vehicle Engineering”inter-university master degree courses, MUNER puts its skills and network of relationships at the service of the “MUNER International School of Higher Education in Automotive for intelligent mobility”, partially founded by Regione Emilia Romagna (Progetti Triennali di Alta Formazione, grant #1251 on 22/07/2019) there, three initiatives are designed for high school students, bachelors and prospect PhD students.
The “Motor Valley Experience” Summer School aims to offer a 10-day university experience to high school students fond of two- and four-wheeled vehicles. Students will immerse themselves in the understanding of high-performance vehicles, combining engineering aspects with the culture of innovation in the Italian automotive sector. Aimed mainly at US students, the initiative is open to Italian, European and international students with a proficiency knowledge of English and a strong STEM background. Hosted virtually by UNIMORE for its 2021 edition, the program includes lectures and workshops held by professors from MUNER, international professors of renowned academic reputation and professionals from companies of the automotive sector; as well as cultural activities and virtual tours.
The “Future of automotive for intelligent mobility” initiative is targeted to master’s graduates and students enrolled in doctoral programs, having a background in automation engineering, electrical, electronics, energy, IT, mechanics, and physics or math. The initiative will take place in Fall 2021, virtually hosted by UNIBO (for more details: highereducation-muner.it). The course intends to offer technical and transversal skills that are essential in defining the future evolution of road vehicles, ranging from technological insights related to industrial engineering and communication and information technologies, up to the knowledge of the most permeating ethical and legal aspects and the soft skills required in the conception, development and manufacture of road vehicles of the near future.

The “Women in Transport” Winter School, scheduled for 2022, offers to motivated and passionate young female students two weeks of in-depth study in the automotive world, with the ultimate goal of overcoming the gender stereotypes that permeate areas traditionally considered as prerogative of men. The initiative, aimed at students who are enrolled or have just obtained a three-year degree in Industrial Engineering from EU countries, intends to transfer fundamental skills to young women for the next generation of engineers, within a training course modern and suitable for the current demand of the industrial world, which is enriched with a specific module dedicated to Gender Balance. The initiative is promoted within the “Women in Transport – EU platform for change” platform, created on the initiative of the European Commission in order to strengthen employment and equal opportunities in the transport sector.
Overall, the three initiatives are characterized by a strong contamination of the academic world with the business world, integrating a marked interdisciplinarity – especially on the themes of greater technological innovation in the automotive sector with a verticality in the levels of detail, maintaining a constant “hands-on” experimentation of the theoretical contents in order to incorporate the continuous transformations taking place in the automotive sector.
